Sixth Grade

Language Arts: 

SPCC School's Language Arts program integrates listening, reading, speaking, grammar, mechanics, and writing skills so that every student has strong communication skills in a technological age. Reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills are also emphasized. Students read a variety genre of books throughout the year from fiction to non-fiction, biography to autobiography, inspirational to motivational, as well as science-fiction and mystery. Throughout the year, students write a variety of essays to enhance their imagination and critical thinking skills.

 Math:

6th grade students learn to understand the four arithmetic operations as they relate to positive rational numbers and integers. They are able to convert between and compute with different forms of rational numbers. Student work to understand the concept of ratio and are able to solve problems using proportional reasoning. They learn about and are able to use line and rotational symmetry. They work to determine the surface area and volume of solid figures and can use variables to represent unknown quantities in formulas, algebraic expressions and equations. By the end of the year, students can utilize data to make predictions and determine the probability of a given event. All students are expected to complete a Math Fair project at the end of the school term.

 Religion:

Students learn to demonstrate the skill of finding particular books, divisions, sections, and stories/passages in the Bible. They recognize and explain the meaning of words and concepts as they are understood with respect to the Old Testament.

6th graders can explain and give examples of different literary forms used in the Bible. They are able to demonstrate the knowledge of sacred times, places, and manners of worship and prayer of Jewish people in Old Testament times and of our own. Students learn how to show stewardship (sharing time, talent, treasures) by completing class or school sponsored service projects. By the end of the year, students have a knowledge and understanding of the Liturgical calendar/seasons. Throughout the year, they will plan and participate in various types of worship and prayer services.

Science:

In Science class,  students study Earth Science, including Structure of the Earth System, Earth History, Earth in the solar system and Science and technology in society, meteorology, geology, astronomy, oceanography, resources, and human impact on the earth. Other topics students will explore are: meteorology and its impact of weather and climate on the Earth, oceanography records, Earth materials and their composition and structure, Earth in space, human impact on the Earth, and energy sources.      

 Social Studies:

The main focus in Social Studies is on the visual representations of major countries and physical features within Europe, Latin America, Canada, and Australia. The goal of this course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live. The geography studied is both physical and human geography.  The government/civics field focuses on selected types of government found in the various areas so as to help students begin to understand the variety of governments in the world. The study of economics shifts from the United States to how other countries answer the basic questions of economics. In history, lessons will cover major events in each region during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
