Our Stories are Important!

OUR HISTORY IS IMPORTANT and must be documented. Find out more about SPCCS Alum, Alice Marcella Bailey, here she where she is telling the Diocese of Savannah about her experiences at SPC parish and school and her relationships with the religious women of the SPC community. She also shares her memories of living in our neighborhood, Pleasant Hill, here.

Ms. Bailey was born in Macon, Georgia to Hattie Lorene Costella Oliver Bailey (d. 1962) and Horace Bailey (d. 1965), the middle of three children. She attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School and [Old] Ballard High School (later named Ballard-Hudson Senior High School) in Macon, GA. She went on to Xavier University, where she earned a B.A. in economics and history in 1963. She also held certificates from Boston College, University of Penn., NYU School of continuing education, Macon State College, and AARP. She retired from Independence Blue Cross (IBC) of Philadelphia, PA where she served as Communications Director. She also worked in the Philadelphia Family Court, Westinghouse Broadcasting, and as a career development counselor for the City of Macon. She was Macon’s own “Party Doll” on the radio as a youngster. and broke the gender barrier on the radio in Macon. She continued to volunteer in the community for her whole life. Ms. Bailey passed away on March 31, 2023. She will be missed by us all.
